This past Tuesday, we had an amazing RS Birthday Party entitled "Aprons Through the Ages". Charise and I made the cutest invites ever! The business size card with all the info fit nicely inside the apron pocket! This was one I saved for myself and hung on my fridge.Every committee member was assigned a decade and we decorated the table with that generations motif along with a cake centerpiece. Guess what decade I got assigned? Yep...the 80s! I even scored a Milli-Vanilli cassette at the thrift store to add to the decor!
The cake ended up being a serious group effort! Everyone in the family contributed something! At first I was irritated because I am a food nazi...but once I realized that we were actually having fun fixing my disaster of a cake I lightened up a bit. Even Ed got in the fun.
Joe claims that fixing a cracked, unlevel cake is much like working with concrete. He smoothed and caulked that frosting like nobody's business! And thanks to Ed, we had the 3-d dots for PacMan to eat. The finished product was so much more amazing than I dreamed possible!
The actual activity was so much fun! We had a typical RS dinner through the ages: Funeral Potatoes, Ham, and of course Green Jello Salad. Too funny! We then played some cool decade trivia games. I had a blast gathering all the info for the different decades in Relief Society so I thought I'd share a bit!What would you do at a Relief Society Activity?

Jill printed up pictures to go to most of these questions. We had bells for the contestants to ring when they found the right picture to the right decade. It was loads of fun! We ended the evening by me reading the poem that mom wrote years ago for her RS Birthday party while living in Spain. Jill made the poem into cute handouts. Everyone loved your poem mom! Thanks for letting us share it! It was the perfect ending to the perfect activity!
Mother’s dress was plain and worn
But around her waist she was adorned
By a bit of fabric that held a power
To love and serve like no other.
She told me once it was her armor
Against the sin of idleness and t’was no wonder
That she slipped it on early each day,
To keep laziness and other “undesirables” away.
With the sash securely behind her tied,
Our darling mother came alive.
She’d milk the cow, then eggs were gathered,
The clothes hand-washed left her skin like leather.
Our meals were simple but ever so tasteful
And no one called my mother wasteful . . .
Her creative powers turned Dad’s old sweater
Into a hat and mittens for my sister.
Yes, when Mother had her apron on,
It seemed as if anything could be done –
A tear was dried, Dad’s pants were mended,
A sickly neighbor’s child was tended.
There was no end to her apron’s charm
And that was why we felt alarm
The morning we saw her apron hung
Before the daily tasks were done.
Her happy smile calmed our fears
She pulled us close and said “My Dears,
Today in Nauvoo I’m going to be
Made a member of a great Society.
The Prophet has a plan in mind
Of serving others, a joy sublime.”
How proud we were of Mother’s choice,
To listen to a Prophet’s voice.
Her days were given to love and service,
Her apron; a symbol of life with purpose!
And now as I tie my apron on,
I think of Mother and what can be done.
There are no limits restraining me
From giving my best to humanity.
