Do You Know who Edwin Binney Is? Carlie Does!

The annual 5th Grade Wax Museum happened to fall on Will's birthday this year. This is one of the biggest projects that kids do in our school district. Jansen was Robert Goddard (inventor of the rocket) when he was in 5th grade. Carlie chose to be Edwin Binney (founder of Crayola Crayons). The kids had to choose someone who they thought made an impact on US History. They do a ton of research and put together either a report or brochure on the person they choose. Then they do a display board which lists their accomplishments and other interesting facts about their person.

Carlie never ceases to amaze me! She came up with the idea to spell out his name with real crayons for the poster title. She also constructed a gigantic crayon out of 3 oatmeal containers. The crayon is blue because that is America's favorite color according to Crayola. She had a hard time finding info on Edwin Binney so she e-mailed the company and they directed her to a biography book. One stop clicking on Amazon and $8 later, she had the info she needed! What did we ever do without the internet?

The final part of the project is to dress up as their person and sit in a frozen position for an hour...thus calling it a wax museum. The students are graded on their research, display boards, and how they hold still! They get bonus points if they choose someone that nobody else researched. It is awesome! The entire 5th grade participates and then we get to ooh and ahh over how clever our kids are! Way to go Car!
love, allie
